American Idol: Barry Manilow?!

March22

Update:

M- I can’t believe Bucky got more votes than Kevin. Uh, I can. If you didn’t see it, Kevin was cut. I’m a little surprised because I knew he had quite a few fans who just liked him because he was the underdog. Not at all surprised at the bottom three, though. (Lisa, Bucky, and Kevin)

Ouch, they cut his song in half at the end of the show. That’s just mean.

Watching tonight’s show on a delay, so no live blogging. But here’s my summary. (last weeks review is here)

Mandisa: Jolly Tamales! She looks gooood tonight! I love her look, very seductive. Out of everyone in this comp, she definitely has the most vocal range (Barry agrees) and she’s one of the few that I enjoy listening to as much as I enjoy watching. (more on that later) Judges love her. M saw the interview w/ Simon earlier this week that Ryan mentioned; his top three pick is Kellie, Taylor, and Chris. He may be right, Taylor has quite a following, but to be honest, if I close my eyes and listen to the guy, I just don’t get excited over it. Mandisa, however, has got some serious pipes. I would definitely pay a buck a pop for each of her songs. I love the girl.

Next up, Bucky: He looks more awkward than usual this week. He might end up going home. cute mic flip thingy, tho.

What’s up w/ Paula’s clapping like a little girl? Are her nails wet or something?

Paris* Finally, a performance of hers that I genuinely enjoy! This is what I’ve been waiting for from her. The song was a great choice. Although M was not too impressed.

Chris singing Walk The Line (I just got that movie through Netflix- need to watch it some time this week) And he’s doing his own thing with it again. ohhhh for the love of cupcakes. Sweet! We get to hear him do a little smooth singing. This guy gives me chills. Randy’s right, he knows who he is and sticks with it. Simon: First artist on this show who refuses to compromise.

Katharine: I really, really like her as a singer. My only complaint with her is that her discomfort in her own skin really shows, so it’s tough for her to stand out. I hope she loosens up a bit tonight. Her dress is better than what she’s worn before, but truth be told, I think she looked hotter in the sweat shirt and ponytail when she was singing w/ Barry.

Oh wow, this song really fits her sultry looks. M- she doesn’t even seem like the same girl. Her presence is much improved, it’s obvious she’s more confident. (what happened between this week and last to do that to her?!) She is completely working it. Simon: Something happened, you turned into a star. (that’s what I was thinking!)

Taylor: Alright, I get the guy, ok? He’s awesome because he’s so cute, he loves to sing, and it shows. His awkward dancing only adds to his charm. But if you listen to him sing, he’s just not as great as some of these other people on stage. I have to disagree w/ Simon, Mandisa sings circles around him and I think she belongs in the final three. I hate to say it, as much as I love the guy as an entertainer, as a singer, he’s just not my favorite.

M- love the white shoes. 8) Only Taylor can get away with skipping across the stage. And he got a haircut! That’s good, the old hair was looking rather… thick. I’m not entirely impressed with his singing. I mean, it is definitely not as good as last weeks. M- There are no lyrics to this song.

Good move, him going behind the judges then finishing next to the sax. Kinda strange, he didn’t do the ending he practiced w/ Barry. Did he forget some lyrics or something? Paula: we should make an excercise video out of it! (Ha! she’s right!) I can tell just by Simon’s face that he hated it. (cam’s not even on him yet) Simon: if this was the first time you saw him, with no other context to go off of, you would think it was a complete mess. (audience is booing so loud I almost can’t hear him. But he’s right) Paula is babbling on about Simon not being able to dance. Simon: Paula, this is a singing competition, not dancing. Shush! (He shushed Paula! I ♡ Simon) Paula is cackling. M- someone turn off her mic!

Lisa* clothes look odd on her this week. I liked last week’s look better. Song’s kind of boring. Cam just cut to some lady giving her a golf clap. Simon: cutesy and highschool. Yup.

Kevin: singing When I fall in Love. Fabulous. Another ballad. Yea.

huh. Actually, not a bad performance. Better than before. I could totally see this guy on Broadway playing Oliver or something, but I don’t see him cutting too many records. Although I like his personality. (probably why he wasn’t in bottom three last week.) Randy: I see something of me in you. O RLY? :) Simon: you know who I think your audience is, they will love that.

Elliot: Well he’s right about Manilow being a good coach, I think Kevin sounded much better when he softened up. Elliot’s singing now and I’m taking this opportunity to go get a bowl of Cap’n Crunch. mmmm….

Still don’t get why the judges love him so much.

Kellie: A little too much rouge… and I don’t like the yellow top. But, heck, I’m reminded again that she really can sing. M agrees, says she sounds like Reba used to sound years ago. I really like her voice, and I’d buy her stuff. Her problem is that she’s coming a year after Carrie Underwood. I don’t think that people will vote for two country blondes in a row, even if I do like Kellie singing better. (although I love Carrie’s “Jesus take the wheel” song)

Song’s over (it was a great performance) and her shirt mic goes out. Can tell by Simon’s face (looking up at Kellie and grinning like a little boy) that he liked it. And of course he did.

Kellie Pickler quotes of the week:

  1. “I thought he was calling me a jacket.” (referring to Simon describing her as a ‘naughty little minx’)
  2. “There’s a Pickle back there!”
  3. (she has a funny head scratching thing going on whenever Ryan asks her a question) “uhh.. well… my eyelashes are better. Look at the pickle!”

Ace: (Little blonde girl is cute.) He’s got Elvis lip! M- he doesn’t really even compare to Chris. Guy can hit some notes though… oh. Well, he was dull there. He hit that one tho… no, too sharp.

Judges are talking to him… told you he makes the same faces every week.

My picks for the night, in no particular order:

  • Mandisa
  • Chris
  • Katharine
  • Kellie
  • I think Lisa or Bucky will be leaving tomorrow. (most likely Bucky)
